My kids love craft time and it is fun for me to see their creativity. I gave my son some popsicle sticks and he decided he wanted to make colorful squares and glue them together. Then we took it a couple steps further and ended up with this fun colorful caterpillar craft!
This popsicle stick caterpillar craft is a great supplemental learning activity to the children’s book “The Very Hungry Caterpillar“. Kids love the book from a very early age. Kids could even craft their own foods like in the book and pretend the caterpillar is eating them. This would also be a great craft to teach different colors to toddlers.
Caterpillar Craft Supplies Needed:
- 26 Popsicle Sticks (to make the squares and antennae)
- Glue
- Markers
- Googly Eyes
- Construction Paper (various colors)
Caterpillar Craft Instructions:
- Gather all of the supplies needed. Pick 6 colored markers and color 24 popsicle sticks, 4 of each color. (Reserve 2 for the antennae).
- Glue each set of 4 together at the corners to form a square. Turn them over so they do not stick and dry to your work surface.
- Cut out similar colored construction paper to size. Glue the construction paper squares to the back of the popsicle stick squares. Set aside to dry.
- Once the squares are dry. Lay out the squares in the pattern you want for your caterpillar. Glue the sections that overlap and come in contact with each other to form your caterpillar. *Tip: Place something heavy like a book on top of your craft while drying so it will dry nice and flat.
- After they dry all together, flip it over and glue on your remaining 2 popsicle sticks for the antennae. Use a black marker to draw on the antennae to the popsicle sticks.
- Use the black marker to draw on your caterpillar face. Then glue on the googly eyes.
- That’s it! Enjoy your fun colorful caterpillar craft.
We hope your kids enjoy this fun caterpillar craft too!
This craft actually ends up being larger than it appears in pictures and would be really cute kid’s room, play room, classroom or library decor.
